Second whale death confirmed in SF Bay this year

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Another whale has been found dead in the San Francisco Bay, scientists with The Marine Mammal Center announced Thursday. The discovery comes after an adult female gray whale was killed by a suspected ship strike last week.

The deceased gray whale this week was found at the Phillips 66 Refinery in Rodeo on Wednesday. According to TMMC, the cause of death remains undetermined as scientists are unable to perform a necropsy, or animal autopsy, due to its inaccessible location.

“Experts identified the whale as a male in a moderate state of decomposition, but an exact age class, length and further details are undeterminable at this time,” TMMC wrote.

The deceased whales mark the first two confirmed stranding incidents of 2026 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
