Court docs: mother of Johnson Co. murder suspect witnessed stabbing, tried to stop attack

CORALVILLE, Iowa (IOWA’S NEWS NOW) — Newly-revealed filings show the mother of a Coralville man charged with his wife’s murder saw her son stabbing his spouse – and even tried to get in between the two of them during the attack.

James Martin was charged with first-degree murder after his wife Amber was found dead in their Spring Rose Circle apartment on January 16. According to a search warrant application from mid-February, Deborah Clover was staying with the couple because her son’s mental health was “spiraling” at the time. She told investigators that she awoke to a sound that morning while sleeping on the living room couch and eventually found Martin attacking Amber in the laundry room. Clover said she begged Martin to stop and stepped in between the two of them at one point.

The applications states that Clover told officers that Martin said he was attacking Amber to “put her out of her misery.” She also said that Martin is bipolar and doesn’t sleep much…
