A History of Our City: How did Lubbock come to be?

LUBBOCK, Texas — The place we call home has come a long way since it was founded over a century ago. While the beginnings of Lubbock were humble, that planted the roots for the Hub City as it stands today.

According to A History of Lubbock by Lawrence L. Graves, Lubbock County actually came first, as it was founded in 1876 after the Texas Constitution ordered the massive amount of unincorporated land in West Texas being split up. The county was named after Thomas S. Lubbock, who was a Texas Ranger, Confederate officer in the Civil War and the brother of former Texas Governor Francis R. Lubbock. It later contained the two settlements that would later come together to form the Hub City.

Old Lubbock and Monterey were established in 1890, as settlers flocked to the newfound county looking to stake their claim. These towns were led by Frank E. Wheelock in Old Lubbock and W. E. Rayner in Monterey. While both men and their towns fought for the potential county seat, they eventually put aside their differences and agreed to merge later that year.
