Inside the heart of Kirkwood

The year was 1853, the peak of industrialization. Railroads ran throughout the country, and the first planned suburban town west of the Mississippi River was being built. Ever since then, the community of Kirkwood agrees that Downtown Kirkwood has remained the soul of the city. Having a train station, local businesses and festive activities, it took many years for Kirkwood to grow into what it is today.

With local businesses being a large part of the community, citizens said the openings of chain businesses such as Starbucks, 7 Brew and Andy’s are causing worry. Brianna Henry, sophomore, said she believes local businesses are the core of the town.

“I think keeping the stores that have been there for a while is really important,” Henry said. “Those businesses have brought people joy for many years.”…
