Defending champs to miss historic Denver Summit FC opener due to scheduling conflict

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Fossil Ridge High School girls’ soccer team won the 5A state championship last fall, but the defending champs will miss what will be the largest National Women’s Soccer League crowd in history because they have their own game to play.

Denver Summit FC kicks off its first-ever home game Saturday at Mile High Stadium with 55,000-60,000 tickets sold, which would shatter the current National Women’s Soccer League single-game attendance record of 40,000 fans. At the same time, the Fossil Ridge Sabercats are scheduled to face Cherry Creek in Fort Collins.

“Trying to massage the system and look at schedules for both Cherry Creek and us, just didn’t happen,” said Fossil Ridge head coach Cyrus Salehi. “We already have to reschedule two games because the only two brutal weather days we’ve had are our game days.”…
