Kent County’s racial homeownership gap is growing, testing shows

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Advocates for fair housing in West Michigan are hoping to close the racial gap between Black and white homeownership after a recent studied showed that more than a third of housing applications were met with some form of discrimination, according to the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan.

Yvonne Jones called her experience trying to rent a property in 2024 “traumatic.” She was denied multiple times because of a decades-old misdemeanor on her record.
