Most-Wanted Fugitive Wanted For Providence Murder Captured in Guatemala After 9 Years on the Lam

A long-standing international manhunt ended this week when Rhode Island authorities announced the capture of a suspect wanted for nearly nine years in the fatal 2017 shooting of a 22-year-old man in Providence.

John E. Nunez, now 36, was arrested Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in Guatemala by local law enforcement working with U.S. officials. He is expected to be extradited to face murder charges in connection with the death of Devin Burney.

On July 1, 2017, Burney was shot and killed shortly after leaving Noah’s Lounge on Broad Street. He was walking toward his car when the attack occurred in what police described as a drive-by incident on a nearby street. Nunez allegedly fled the country soon afterward, using false identification to evade detection and building a new life abroad under an assumed identity.
