South City Bike Bust Turns Fatal After Cuffed 68-Year-Old Collapses

A 68-year-old man is dead after what started as a brief bicycle chase on St. Louis’ south side and ended in a hospital cardiac arrest, according to city police. Officers say they detained the man Saturday near Grand and Itaska, and he later died just before 4 p.m. after telling police he did not feel well. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s Force Investigation Unit is now probing what happened between the stop, the arrest and his death.

What police say

Police say District 1 officers first saw the man riding a bicycle shortly after 1 p.m. and later identified him as having 10 outstanding felony warrants. They also described him as a person of interest in three burglaries. According to the department, the man tried to get away on his bike, fell while fleeing and was taken into custody.

Officers reported finding what they described as possible drugs on him before he was transported to a hospital. He went into cardiac arrest and died shortly before 4 p.m., according to First Alert 4. Police have not publicly released his name.

How SLMPD investigates

The Force Investigation Unit handles critical incidents and deaths that occur during or after police contact and posts preliminary updates on a dedicated page, according to the SLMPD. Detectives typically pull body-worn camera footage, interview witnesses and review medical records while assembling a report.

So far, police have not disclosed the man’s identity or additional details about his medical condition before or after the arrest. The case remains under active review.
