This Bethlehem teenager is fighting food deserts one seed library at a time

At just 17 years old, Madeline Yang has firmly planted herself in the field of sustainability. She has developed a (productive) passion for fighting food insecurity and takes pride in being able to grow her own food.

In eighth grade, Yang, a Bethlehem native, learned that her city was classified as a food desert, in which people have limited access to fresh, affordable and nutritious foods. Providing access to these foods is a component of overall sustainability, so Yang, now a junior at Moravian Academy, continued down that path.

The standout student leads her school’s Green Team (a sustainability club), launched a garden club, which gets students involved in the school’s gardens, and is a captain on the dance team. She was also selected for her school’s first cohort of students to participate in an international sustainability fellowship in Switzerland…
