Nashville Main Library Reopens After Nine‑Month Closure

After nearly nine months dark, Nashville’s Main Library in downtown is coming back to life. The sprawling public hub on Church Street will reopen to the public on Monday, March 30, following a closure that began after an early-morning fire ripped through the adjacent parking garage on June 10, 2025. The blaze sent heavy smoke into parts of the library but never reached the stacks. During the shutdown, staff and restoration crews cleaned, repaired, and reorganized both the collections and the building’s public spaces.

Months of inspections and restoration

The Main Library will resume regular weekday hours, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., though the first-floor conference center will stay closed while longer-term repairs continue, according to Nashville Public Library. Restoration experts, environmental professionals, and industrial hygienists worked in rotating 12-hour shifts to assess roughly 300,000 square feet of space and confirm that indoor air quality was back to acceptable levels. NPL’s assessment found that the vast majority of the collection could be salvaged, though some specialized areas will need additional work.

Books, crews and staff

Library staff spent months cleaning and reorganizing more than 269,000 books, as reported by WSMV, while restoration crews initially worked around the clock in 12-hour shifts to evaluate the damage. Director Terri Luke told reporters that staff moved key operations off-site early so Nashvillians could keep accessing materials during the closure. “I have worked in libraries for many years, and I can safely say that one of these closures is enough for any library career,” Luke said.

What started the closure

The shutdown followed the June 10 garage blaze that sent plumes of smoke across downtown and caused parts of the structure to collapse, officials said in reporting by AP News. Metro leaders have said that a tangle of insurance claims and contractor questions slowed repairs, according to reporting by WPLN. Local coverage at the time captured the immediate scene and early evacuations near the garage and hotel skybridge.

Parking and visiting the library

The parking garage next to the building remains closed while NDOT works with engineers to make the structure safe for parking again, per a Metro release. Patrons can park at the McKendree Garage across the street at 140 6th Ave. North at a discounted rate and use a QR-code validation process to apply the discount, Nashville Public Library says…
