Legend Claims Daniel Boone Met the Ozark Howler in Missouri

The legend of the Ozark Howler has been told for centuries in Missouri, but did you know that the stories of this terrifying creature have a real connection to history including Daniel Boone who warned settlers of its existence.

I am a fan of Josh Gates and his many Expeditions shows including Expedition Unknown, Expedition Files and the newest Expedition X which deals with both history and the paranormal. It wasn’t that long ago that he and his team tackled the legend of the Ozark Howler including some real quotes from one of Missouri’s most famous sons, Daniel Boone. He wrote a letter to his sister in law that said the following:

“It’s black and swarthy with horns atop his scalp…I am told the sound that it makes…a terrible howling in the middle of the night…warnings of this for settlers should be passed along.”

During the 1800’s, the stories of the Ozark Howler were not treated as superstitions or wild imaginations that got carried away, but a real threat for those who had settled in Missouri to make the land their home.
