LASD deputy dies after medical emergency during Baker to Las Vegas relay race

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy died after suffering a medical emergency while participating in the 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay race, officials announced.

Despite receiving medical care, the deputy, now identified as 30-year-old Levi Vargas, ultimately died from his injuries, officials said. The deputy’s family has been notified, and the department said it has been coordinating with loved ones to provide support and resources.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our San Dimas Sheriff’s Deputy,” the department said in its statement.
