Palm Sunday at Newlyn Street UMC

The last two weeks of Lent, known as Passiontide, many churches drape crosses with purple fabric. Such is the tradition of Newlyn Street United Methodist Church. A black fabric will be in place on Good Friday and white on Easter Sunday. Also on Easter Sunday, the cross will be draped with flowers. That is such a lovely tradition.

Newlyn Street Methodist Church was organized in 1921 and rebuilt in 1954. When we visited on Saturday, we talked to a lovely, young adult member, Emoline, who grew up in Greensboro, talked about her church with great pride. It is always special to make a new friend when out photographing for Greensboro Daily Photo. That’s when we get the personal stories. Emoline told us about a preacher, around twenty years ago, who said if they got 200 people in the sanctuary, she would preach from the roof, and, that she did!…
