- I visit Croatia every year. There are 4 places I think should be on every itinerary. (businessinsider.com)
For three decades, Croatia has held a special place in my heart. From the moment I first encountered its rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters, I was captivated by a destination that feels both timeless and genuine.
Unlike the sandy lakesides of my youth, Croatia introduced me to a vibrant underwater world filled with sea cucumbers, small fish, and crabs – a true delight for any nature enthusiast. Over the years, I’ve returned nearly every year, drawn by the country’s authentic charm, unspoiled landscapes, and relaxed atmosphere. Here are four standout spots that continue to enchant me.
Step into the world of “Game of Thrones” on Lokrum Island
For fans of the hit HBO series, a short ferry ride from Dubrovnik to Lokrum Island offers a unique chance to explore the city of Qarth as seen on screen.
The island’s Benedictine monastery gardens provide a peaceful setting, while a small exhibition includes a replica of the iconic Iron Throne. Even if you’re not a fan of the show, Lokrum has plenty to offer-take a dip in the saltwater lake known as Mrtvo More, unwind on quiet beaches, or enjoy spotting the island’s free-roaming peacocks.
Find tranquility along Rab Island’s seaside promenade
While many visitors flock to the sandy beaches of Lopar, I prefer the quieter stretch between Palit and Rab.
This seaside promenade invites simple pleasures-morning jogs, breakfasts with a view, and refreshing swims. The shaded little beaches beneath pine trees provide perfect spots to relax, accompanied by the quintessential Croatian soundtrack of cicadas buzzing in the summer heat.
It’s a place where families gather, seashells are hunted, and ice cream is savored.
Experience a fairy tale in Rastoke
Just half an hour from the famous Plitvice Lakes National Park, Rastoke is a village that feels like something out of a storybook.
The Slunjčica River flows through the area, creating over 20 waterfalls alongside original watermills. The village also features an enchanting fairy garden with hidden sculptures that delight children and a boardwalk trail that invites visitors to explore the cascading waters.
It’s a charming destination that transports you back in time.
Discover the hidden gem of Imotski
Perched atop a plateau overlooking the stunning Modro Jezero (Blue Lake), Imotski is a lesser-known treasure.
The lake, nestled in a sinkhole, fills with water after spring rains, attracting swimmers. When it dries up, the crater transforms into a unique soccer field for local matches between teams named Elves and Werewolves.
Nearby, the Topana Fortress offers panoramic views from the town’s highest point, while Crveno Jezero (Red Lake) in another sinkhole presents breathtaking scenery.
Croatia is a country that keeps calling me back, and I’m certain it will captivate you as well. Whether it’s the natural beauty, historic sites, or simply the atmosphere, this destination offers something special for every traveler.
