The Independence Chamber of Commerce honored Sugar Creek Firefighters Jacob Ferrell, Cooper Bracken, Tony Pearce, Captain Jason Rivera, and Chief Nate Richardson at its First Responders Breakfast for acts of bravery and heroism. In the Bravery Award case, crews rescued a tugboat captain in cardiac arrest on the Missouri River on August 5, 2025, reviving him twice and helping him make a full recovery.
