Skip NYC Airports and Fly From White Plains to Save Time and Stress

Choosing White Plains Over NYC Airports Eases Travel Stress

For years, I was that traveler who chased the absolute cheapest airfare-no matter the long layovers, delays, or multiple connections. Saving money was the goal, even if it meant hours lost in airports or on flights. That strategy worked fine-until I started flying with kids.

Traveling with little ones changes the game. Every extra minute in transit feels like a lifetime.

What I thought was saving money ended up costing more: missed connections, frustrating delays, overpriced airport snacks, and even unused hotel stays when flights fell through. On top of that, flying has generally become more challenging, with busier airports and unpredictable schedules.

In recent weeks, New York’s major airports-JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia-have been especially strained. Staffing shortages at TSA have caused long delays and missed flights, while a ground incident at LaGuardia added to the chaos. Faced with these challenges during a recent work trip to California, I decided to try a different approach.

Instead of battling crowds at the big city airports, I booked my flight out of Westchester County Airport, near White Plains. This smaller airport is a hidden gem just 30 miles north of NYC, handling about 2.3 million passengers a year-small compared to the tens of millions passing through JFK or Newark.

Westchester County Airport’s single terminal and limited gates mean the space is more manageable. It’s not packed with endless dining options or duty-free shops, but when you’re not stuck waiting for hours, you really don’t need them. The smaller size means shorter lines, less congestion, and a more predictable experience overall.

On the day of my flight, I left home in Nyack at 3:30 a.m. for a 6:30 a.m. departure. The drive took just 24 minutes with no traffic.

Despite a slightly busier check-in line, the mood was calm and orderly-unlike the stress I imagine at larger airports. Security took less than 10 minutes.

After clearing security, I stopped by the one food outlet, “Pre-Flight Pantry and Provisions,” which offered an impressive variety of sandwiches, salads, snacks, and essentials. The line for coffee was even longer than the security line! I settled into a comfy seat near an outlet and got some work done before boarding.

As boarding began, the terminal filled up, but the atmosphere remained relaxed and friendly. Looking around, I couldn’t help but think how much more chaotic it must have been at JFK or Newark that morning.

For anyone weary of the stress and unpredictability of major airports-especially families-Westchester County Airport is worth considering. Sometimes, a smaller airport means a smoother, less stressful journey.
