Rockford pushes forward on $6.6M ‘Highcrest Connection’

ROCKFORD, IL — A key part of the city’s plans to become more bike and pedestrian friendly is taking shape on Highcrest Road.

Rockford City Council is considering a $120,000 contract with Peoria-based Hanson Professional Services to acquire land and easements needed for the long-awaited “Highcrest Connection” multi-use path. The planned 1.7-mile path from Spring Creek to Alpine Road on the southside of Highcrest is estimated to cost $6.6 million and is part of the five-year Capital Improvement Program.

Costs of the project have more than doubled from 2022 estimates with inflation and changes to the plans. Plans were updated after the city heard complaints from residents about excessive speeding on Highcrest and the path’s potential impact on mature tree canopy, Capital Improvement Program Manager Tim Hinkens said…
