Judge issues temporary restraining order as Birmingham fights Central Alabama water to keep fluoride in water

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A judge has filed a temporary restraining order to keep Central Alabama Water from shutting fluoride out of its water supply, at least for now.

On Monday, Circuit Judge Frederic Allen Bolling allowed a motion from the city of Birmingham to temporarily stop the water authority from its plans of discontinuing the fluoridization of the water. This comes after the group voted March 20 to stop adding fluoride to its water supply, the main source of water for Jefferson County and four surrounding counties.

At the time, CWA officials said that the decision was a financial one, estimated to cost roughly $3.7 million to replace existing equipment to bring back fluoride. The decision came after significant cuts the CWA has made, such as laying off 135 workers…
