MFD: Improperly discarded cigarettes cause downtown balcony fire

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Officials believe cigarettes put out in a plastic planter caused a small balcony fire at a downtown Madison apartment on Sunday.

Madison Fire Department crews responded to the fire just after 11 p.m. Sunday on North Hancock Street.

Firefighters found the fire on a third-floor balcony unit with fire spreading to the second-story balcony below it, where a bench had also caught fire. They quickly extinguished both fires and some smoke inside the upper-level apartment unit…
