South Carolina woman accused of scamming $12K in Bitcoin from Lancaster County man

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A Columbia, South Carolina, woman was arrested on Monday for reportedly taking part in a phone scam where the caller claimed to be part of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department.

Veronica Oliva, 36, was charged with:

  • Dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities
  • Theft by deception
  • Criminal conspiracy to commit theft by deception
  • Receiving stolen property

Court records show that, on Jan. 30, Manheim Township police spoke with a man who claimed he spoke with a “Sgt. Dean Mitchell” who claimed he had an arrest warrant issued for missing jury duty.

To avoid arrest, the scammer told the man to withdraw $12,000 from his bank account and deposit it into a Coinhub Bitcoin ATM at a Sunoco on Copley Drive…
