High-Speed Horror on Grimmer Boulevard as Fremont Passenger Killed in Charger Crash

A late-night run down Grimmer Boulevard turned deadly last Saturday when a Dodge Charger slammed into traffic barriers on a curve in Fremont, killing a passenger and sending the driver to the hospital, city officials said. The collision happened about 1:42 AM near the bend between Irvington Avenue and Carol Avenue. One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was transported to a hospital, according to authorities.

Driver Arrested After Passenger Dies

In a news release, Fremont police said the Charger had been heading south on Grimmer Boulevard at a very high rate of speed when the driver lost control approaching the curve and hit the barriers that line the roadway, according to the Fremont Police Department. The passenger, an adult man, died at the scene. The driver, also an adult man, was taken to a hospital and later arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter before being booked into Santa Rita Jail, The Mercury News reported.

Investigation Still in Early Stages

Investigators have not ruled out drug or alcohol impairment as a factor in the crash, according to the Fremont Police Department. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash-cam footage from the area is asked to contact the department’s Traffic Unit at (510) 790-6760, according the release.

Deadly Start to 2026 on Fremont Streets

The wreck is the fifth fatal collision in Fremont so far in 2026, a tally that has renewed questions about speed and enforcement on some of the city’s busier corridors, according to The Mercury News. Hoodline previously covered a December incident in which a driver allegedly fled a traffic stop and then struck a pedestrian on a nearby stretch of roadway, a deadly sidewalk crash that underscored long-running concerns about Grimmer and surrounding streets. City officials say they are reviewing collision data as the latest investigations continue.
