Lawsuit filed against VHSL and school board alleging discrimination against home-school students

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A Roanoke County family has filed a lawsuit against the Virginia High School League and the Roanoke County School Board. They’re challenging the constitutionality of Virginia’s rule prohibiting home school students from participating in high school athletics, claiming it discriminatory.

The Founding Freedoms Law Center filed the lawsuit in federal court on behalf of the Palmer family. The Palmers homeschool their ninth-grade son, Samuel, for religious reasons, but said he has a passion for running. However, Virginia’s rules prohibit him from competing with his local high school’s track and cross-country teams; something his parents are fighting against.
