Where Madison plans to replace city streets, bikeways and sidewalks

As city department leaders near a deadline to submit their budget requests for next year, Madison planners are narrowing down their wish list of street and bike path projects for 2027 and beyond.

Here’s an overview of planners’ recommendations for street reconstructions, bike path studies and sidewalk replacements, as well as where Madison stands on its goals for pavement conditions:

Streets

Around 4 miles of streets are tentatively scheduled for reconstruction in 2027, Deputy City Engineer Chris Petykowski said during a recent Transportation Commission meeting.

High on the city’s priority list are portions of Milwaukee Street and several streets just south of it on Madison’s near east side, and several streets in the former town of Madison, which dissolved in 2022 and was absorbed into the city…
