Cleveland kicks out Eastside Market operator, looks to find new grocer for food desert

CLEVELAND, Ohio — When the Eastside Market reopened in 2019, it was pitched as an oasis in one of Cleveland’s food deserts. Today, it’s closing its doors for the second time, leaving City Hall to reimagine the space once more.

Cleveland is declining to renew its lease with the Eastside market’s operator, Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services. City Spokesperson Sarah Johnson said the nonprofit has more than $200,000 in unpaid property taxes and $50,000 in unpaid utilities.

Johnson said the city had tried to help NEON in the past. One effort was giving the nonprofit a partial tax abatement at the Eastside Market, but the nonprofit did not fill out the paperwork…
