As energy bills spike in Central New York, home improvement companies see impact on consumers

GEDDES, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — National Grid rates are set to rise again on April 1 and people are struggling to pay for their electric bills. But local home improvement companies are also seeing the impact of consumers’ utility cost worries.

Don Shetler, owner of windows and insulation company Energy Savers, gets phone calls daily from people who can no longer afford their utility bills. For families, especially, Shetler said, costs have doubled — or in some cases tripled.

“They’re families, they got multiple generations living in the home. Everybody is affected by it, and it’s a huge burden, it almost caught everybody off,” Shetler added.

While some customers foresaw the hikes, others were left in the dark until the day their bills arrived in the mail. Shelter recalled how he hears “nightmare stories” of utilities soaring up to $1,000 a month, with answers still unmet…
