Downtown Wichita building to become first responder wellness center

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita Crime Commission is in the process of purchasing a building in downtown Wichita to convert into a first responder wellness center.

The building at Third Street and Broadway Avenue is part of a larger plan to strengthen employee morale, retention, and mental and physical health services.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said it will be a one-stop shop for all first responders, including 911 dispatchers.

For those who answer every call, a Wichita nonprofit answers theirs

“Sometimes we forget the stress of being a 911 caller and the stress of that job, talking to somebody on the phone and listening to some pretty horrific things,” Sullivan said. “So that’s why we believe that it’s very important that all first responders — our medics, the things that they see — that it’s very important that they have a place to go, and it’s just not law enforcement-centered.”…
