Transportation officials tracking faulty traffic lights in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — When traffic lights stay red or green for a little too long, the Regional Transportation Commission works to find out what’s going on. Each month, RTC releases a report on which intersections are seeing high rates of traffic signal detection failures.

In February, 199 intersections across the Las Vegas valley had high signal failure rates.

“There are 1,700 traffic signals in southern Nevada, and we’re always getting a health report on the detection of these signals every day,” Theresa Gaisser, deputy CEO of RTC Southern Nevada, said.

Signal detectors are the devices that tell a traffic light how many cars are waiting, adjusting the timing of lights. The most common in the valley are induction loops under pavement, or sensors mounted on traffic poles…
