GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With Saturday marking four years since former Grand Rapids officer Christopher Schurr shot and killed Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop, the family’s lawyer said justice has not been served.
Last year, a jury heard the evidence in Schurr’s criminal trial. After more than a week of testimony and 20 hours of deliberation, the jury could not come to a decision, and a mistrial was declared. Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker chose not to retry the case.
Schurr is still facing a civil lawsuit from Lyoya’s family, which is set to begin Oct. 19 in Kalamazoo. There will be another jury in the civil trial. It is estimated to take about three weeks…
