Eight displaced after discarded smoking materials causes house fire

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Red Cross is assisting residents forced out of their homes after a basement fire.

Fire crews were called to Catherine Street near Lodi Street on the city’s Northside just after 7.p.m. According to Syracuse Fire Captain Erik Caster, the building suffered extensive smoke damage, leaving it uninhabitable for residents.

Caster says firefighters encountered heavy fire in the basement, and damage to a stairwell between floors which made it more difficult for crews to contain the flames…
