MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two similar fraud cases in which people were scammed financially.
Officials said the contact originated on a home computer, where the victims were told their bank accounts were hacked and could rectify a financial loss by taking specific steps. The scammer directed the victims to complete forms and download social media apps for a “more secure communication experience.”
One case from this March involved a Windsor resident who received a notification on his computer regarding his “hacked” bank accounts. He was also accused of money laundering and drug trafficking in other countries. The scammers claimed to be with the U.S. Marshals and convinced the man to send multiple payments through the mail.
