Springfield looking to address ‘food deserts’ in parts of town

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — According to the City of Springfield, nearly 38,000 people live in a food desert.

But what is a ‘food desert’?

“Food deserts, as a part of the definition, are in areas where individuals may be low income and have low access, may not be as connected to some of the goods and services as, other urban areas of Springfield,” Amanda Ohlensehlen with the city said. “Having that access to healthy food, being able to go to a grocery store or supermarket, or even have access to farmers’ markets and other community-supported food opportunities, is really important to having a vibrant community where all of our residents can improve their quality of life.”…
