Spokane County Commissioners delay accepting DHS grant for FIFA World Cup security

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Tuesday Spokane County Commissioners voted to wait on whether or not to accept Department of Homeland Security grant money to help pay for extra security during June’s FIFA World Cup events. The commissioners say the delay is because they’re still waiting for a signed contract from the state.

Spokane has been selected to serve as a fan site zone, while Seattle will host some of the soccer matches.

Spokane County Undersheriff Kevin Richey came before the commissioners to ask them to consider accepting this grant to help bolster security capabilities. Undersheriff Richey says in its entirety of more than $726,000, the grant will help fund things like overtime for regional crews to make their way to Seattle, as well as three pieces of equipment for the sheriff’s office…
