Black bears are emerging for the spring. Here are some safety tips as encounters increase

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Bears are back on the move in and around Buncombe County. In the last week, News 13 has seen an increase in submissions to our Chime In feature of spring black bear activity.

While these amazing creatures look cute and cuddly, it’s important to keep a distance for safety reasons. It’s also important to consider how you can deter them from visiting your trash cans.

According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, black bears rarely become aggressive when encountering people, and attacks on humans are very uncommon. However, encounters between people and bears are becoming more frequent as more people move into areas where black bears live.
