Huntersville charter school behind on nearly $240K in property taxes, flagged by state for financial concerns

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Huntersville charter school that opened two years ago is behind on nearly $240,000 in unpaid property taxes and has been placed on a state noncompliance list after operating at a financial loss — even as its enrollment continues to increase.

Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy, which opened in 2023, is the newest school associated with Bonnie Cone Charter Schools. It opened just a few years after its sister school, Bonnie Cone Classical Academy, also in Huntersville.

State education leaders say the newer school was placed on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s noncompliance list after it finished the last fiscal year in the red…
