Murder charge to be dropped if judge accepts deal for 2024 shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A man has entered a plea agreement with the contingency that his murder charge would be dropped.

64-year-old Dwayne Sims has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to voluntary manslaughter for his role in a 2024 shooting at a Fort Wayne apartment complex. He was originally charged with murder, voluntary manslaughter, and a firearm sentence enhancement.

After several mental fitness screenings by medical professionals and many instances of being deemed mentally unfit to stand trial, only to have that ruling revoked, Sims is citing his mental illness to have his murder charge dropped…
