Kamran Afzal named next Greensboro police chief, set to start May 13

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro has selected its next police chief following a national search, city officials announced Tuesday.

City Manager Trey Davis picked Kamran Afzal to lead the Greensboro Police Department. Afzal succeeds John Thompson, who retired in February after more than 20 years with the department. Afzal will begin his duties May 13.

Afzal brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience to the role. He began his career with the U.S. Capitol Police in 1991 before joining the Arlington County, Virginia, Police Department in 1993, where he spent 24 years — 12 of them on the command staff. During his time in Arlington County, he oversaw community policing, special operations, and human resources, and led efforts ranging from initiatives to reduce child sexual abuse to the launch of in-car cameras…
