Tennessee health company to pay over $2M amid claims of poor care, Medicare overcharges

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — A Tennessee nursing home operator will pay more than $2 million to resolve allegations it provided dangerously poor care while overcharging Medicare and TennCare. American Health Companies, LLC, doing business as American Health Partners, faces claims that its Lewis County Nursing and Rehabilitation facility repeatedly failed residents between 2019 and 2024.

“This settlement is essential to protecting the elderly and disabled residents of our community who depend on quality care,” said United States Attorney Braden H. Boucek. “But it is equally essential to protect the taxpayers who fund these programs. When facilities inflate charges while cutting corners on care, they undermine both quality for the people they serve and the public trust. Strong enforcement sends a clear message that exploiting seniors and the American taxpayer will have real consequences.”

The 131-bed Hohenwald facility, then operating as AHC Lewis County, allegedly failed to provide proper wound care, infection control, and fall prevention. Residents reportedly suffered from preventable weight loss, loss of mobility, and excessive prescriptions of antipsychotic medications…
