$18.9M broadband expansion brings high-speed internet to rural Fort Bend County

With the help of federal funding, county commissioners have partnered with internet provider Comcast to expand broadband infrastructure by the end of the year in Kendleton, Needville, Simonton and Thompsons.

High-speed internet is coming to several rural areas in Fort Bend County that have lacked access to broadband services as part of a nearly $19 million, federally funded county partnership with Philadelphia-based Comcast, which is one of multiple cable television and internet providers in the Houston area.

More than 1 million Texas households are in rural areas where network phone service is more expensive to provide, with fewer customers and longer distances between them.

One of the four towns selected for broadband infrastructure in Fort Bend County was Thompsons, located about 20 miles southwest of Sugar Land.
