Parrish ‘Monkey Whisperer’ sentenced to federal prison for wildlife trafficking

PARRISH, Fla. (WWSB) – A Parrish man known as “The Monkey Whisperer” has been sentenced to federal prison after prosecutors said he trafficked primates while on probation for a similar crime.

Jimmy Wayne Hammonds, 62, was sentenced to nine months in prison for conspiring to violate the Lacey Act and for Lacey Act trafficking, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. U.S. District Judge Mary S. Scriven also ordered three years of supervised release.

The court also ordered Hammonds to pay a $60,000 fine to benefit the Lacey Act Reward Fund. He is also banned from possessing, breeding, selling, transporting or exhibiting wildlife…
