Hands-Free Law, nearly 3,500 citations issued statewide with Charleston County at the top of the list

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – With the first 30 days of the Hands-Free Law being in full enforcement, data shows drivers in Charleston County received more citations than anywhere in the state.

The 6-month warning period for the Hands-Free Law ended February 28th, 2026. After the first 30 days, nearly 3,500 citations were issued statewide for holding or using devices such as cellphones while driving. Charleston County had the highest number of citations, 470, in the 30-day period.
