HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Horry County leaders on Wednesday took steps to grant themselves more oversight of a planned landfill expansion, with several wanting to explore mandatory recycling.
“I think that’s one of the things that we need to investigate that I don’t think has been thoroughly investigated by the Solid Waste Authority,” councilman Dennis DiSabato said. “I think there might be more opportunities for us to mitigate the amount of expansion they’re needing if we were to put some type of mandatory recycling program in place.”
The county’s Solid Waste Authority for years has been working toward growing the Highway 90 landfill to extend its lifespan through 2051 and in December applied for a federal U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit that would allow 120 acres of wetlands to be filled in for that purpose…
