Sheriff Tyree Jones reflects on time as Jackson police chief

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – For the past seven months, Tyree Jones has served a dual role as both chief of police for the Jackson Police Department (JPD) and as the Hinds County sheriff.

On March 31, 2026, Jones wrapped up his time guiding JPD through a transition and the department prepares for a new leadership. He said the experience was a highlight in his 26-year law enforcement career.

Jones started his career at JPD and said returning to the department was a full-circle moment.

“I also believe I’ve been in a position to help people, mentor younger people, mentor younger officers to give them some of the things and the tools that they need to make sure that they’re successful,” he said…
