Alabama beach warning system now notifies the public of confirmed shark attacks

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WDHN) – An emergency alert system is now in place to notify the public when a shark attack occurs on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, WDHN’s sister station, WKRG News Channel 5 reports.

Imagine you’re at the beach, phone in hand, suddenly an emergency alert cuts through the calm. You look down and read the words shark alert. It’s a scenario first responders in Baldwin county say they are ready for.

Baldwin County beachgoers will receive a wireless emergency alert when a shark attack has been confirmed by a first responder or competent authority. Using FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System, the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency will push the geo-targeted shark alerts to cell phones in the affected area.

“The goal is to inform everybody who might be thinking about going to the beach that day that, hey, just understand this has occurred,” Baldwin EMA Director Tom Tyler said…
