Murfreesboro’s Billy Pittard explains enthusiasm for cemeteries: ‘This is my family’

There are multitudes of genealogists who search through historical documents hoping to find the names and details of their ancestors, but only a handful go a giant step further by tracking down ancient family graveyards where tombstones mark the ground in which their forefathers were laid to rest.

Regrettably, many of these rural burying grounds have been lost to posterity as families move away forever. In the meantime, Mother Nature does her part by smothering the sites with bushes, trees and vines while strong winds and grazing cattle knock over the headstones, often cracking the memorials.

Greed and progress also come into play when developers encroach on acreages that were once considered far from the center of town. A few turn a blind eye to these sacred places and commit desecration by having bulldozers scrape away any signs that might reveal there once was a cemetery on these hallowed plots of green earth…
