Mom and pop pharmacy owners say relief is needed soon if they are to survive

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — Independent pharmacy owners say relief from low reimbursement payments from pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs, is needed soon if they are too survive.

In a roundtable meeting with Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) Wednesday, nearly a dozen owners of neighborhood pharmacies from Hampton Roads shared stories of continually taking losses to fill customer orders.

“Every day we take a loss on prescriptions,” said Kelly Hasty Kale, owner of Olde Towne Pharmacy in Williamsburg. “Some losses we can absorb — they’re minimal enough that some of the other things we do within our pharmacies can compensate for that, and some are tremendous losses.”…
