Cotton Exchange celebrates 50 years in downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Cotton Exchange is marking its 50th anniversary as a downtown shopping and dining destination.

The property at 321 N. Front St. opened in 1976. According to the release, developers Joe Reeves and Mal Murray restored the buildings during a period when much of downtown faced demolition. John and Jean Bullock purchased the property in 1990.

The Cotton Exchange houses more than 25 locally owned shops and restaurants in restored brick buildings connected by courtyards and walkways.

“We’re really celebrating 50 years of local dreams,” said Cheryl Hartsoe, property manager and member of the Bullock family. “The Cotton Exchange has always been about supporting small businesses. Many merchants have started their businesses here, and several establishments have been with us for more than 40 years, which speaks to the strong community we’ve built together.”…
