Sudden Warning Gives Thousands Only Minutes to Act

Thousands of people in southern Iowa were urged to “take cover now!” as a potentially dangerous thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado tore through the area.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Des Moines issued the tornado warning at 2:38 p.m. Thursday Central time, giving people only minutes to seek shelter before the storm. The warning was set to remain in effect until 3:15 p.m. for northeastern Wayne County, including Promise City and Millerton. The latter is 65 miles south of Des Moines.
