Community delivers petition for closure of Ray Nixon Power Plant

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Tuesday, March 31, dozens of community members from across the Pikes Peak region threw a retirement party for the Ray Nixon Power Plant, with the goal of getting the plant closed by 2029.

On Wednesday, April 1, members of the Sierra Club CO’s Clean Energy campaign delivered a petition with over 1,000 signatures from community members and 35 from business leaders, demanding Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) leaders keep their promises and close the plant by the end of 2029.

The Sierra Club said in 2020, Springs Utilities agreed to close the Nixon Power Plant by the end of 2029 as part of its Clean Energy Plan. Springs Utilities is now asking state officials to allow for the delay of its emissions reduction deadline…
