Cumberland County police remind e-bikers of law after child crashes riding into traffic

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A crash involving a child riding an e-bike this week in Cumberland County has police issuing a reminder of the law.

Upper Allen Township Police said Wednesday’s crash at the intersection of Gettysburg Pike and South York Street resulted in only minor injuries to the child.

Police said the child was “unlawfully” riding the e-bike on the road, into the path of oncoming traffic.

According to police, the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code refers to an E-bike as a bicycle. The vehicle codes list characteristics for E-bikes, such as weighing less than 100 pounds, having three wheels or fewer, which are also greater than 11 inches in diameter, having operable pedals, an electric motor that is less than 750 watts and can’t go more than 20mph on a level road only when it’s powered by the motor alone…
