Low-flying helicopters to survey geology across 16 Michigan counties

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Low-flying helicopters will soon take to the skies over 16 counties in southwest Michigan to map the region’s geology.

Survey flights are set to begin in April and continue through the summer, covering Ingham, Jackson, Hillsdale and 13 other counties.

The helicopters will fly at about 200 feet and carry a large, hoop-like horizontal frame suspended on a cable about 100 feet below the aircraft. The equipment will measure differences in the Earth’s electrical properties and magnetic field caused by varying rock types across the region…
